Beg the Question

Beg the Question tells the story of Rob Hoffman and Sylvia Fanucci, two twentysomethings navigating the labyrinth of contemporary life in New York City. Imagine a cross between Friends and Caligula, set in the naked city — in Fingerman's case, often very naked.

Beg the Question chronicles the trials and tribulations of protagonists Rob — a squeamish freelance cartoonist/pornographer — and Sylvia — a beauty salon manager with loftier aspirations — as well as a supporting cast featuring Jack, an unhappily celibate literary stalker; Max, a lovesick wannabe Lothario; Matt, the Godzilla-collecting, stripper-dating rich kid in denial; Maddie, Sylvia's lesbian old flame; Elvis, the mordant and very corpulent smut editor; and many more.

Originally conceived as a finite graphic novel — but pragmatically executed in serial form, a la Dickens, only with fewer street urchins — Beg the Question is the culmination of what Fingerman always intended his critically acclaimed comic book series Minimum Wage to be: a dense, hearty, empathetic, humorous yarn populated by characters and situations literally drawn from life.

From pandering and peddling porn, to battling bellicose Brooklyn bozos, Rob and Sylvia struggle to keep their sunny sides up while grappling with unsatisfying careers, potential parenthood, nuptials and vicissitudes aplenty.

New York has never been more accurately depicted in the comic medium and is as much a character in Beg the Question as the flesh and blood ones. Beg the Question is the perfect book for aging Gen-X-ers and Y-ers (and beyonders) facing the reality that Nevermind came out over a decade ago and the mortgage payment is due this week.
